A man has been jailed for his role in the “brutal” kidnapping where a former bikie was held hostage for nine hours with duct tape wrapped around his face.

Shannon Finau, 28, pleaded guilty to taking and detaining in company with the intent to ransom and occasioning actual bodily harm, and specially aggravated break and enter to commit a serious indictable offence.

A charge of tampering with evidence to mislead a judicial tribunal was also taken into account during the sentencing of the Rooty Hill man.

A group of men charged over their alleged involvement are set to fight the charges at trial.

At 2.57am on June 1, 2021, Dillon Mancuso was asleep at a residence in Bringelly when seven people allegedly forced the door open and entered the house with their faces covered with clothing.

Mr Mancuso was allegedly dragged from his bed. When he managed to break free and tried to escape, the group allegedly pursued him and recaptured him, allegedly striking his body and causing many injuries. Mr Mancuso’s father was also allegedly assaulted during this.

During the trip between the Mancuso‘s home and a warehouse at Revesby, Mr Mancuso’s face was wrapped in duct tape.

In one message sent to a contact in the victim’s home, the alleged kidnappers wrote, “who are you to him. we want 30 mil worth of cash or product to right his wrongs. Spam them get their attention. After nightfall he’s going in the hole”.

The agreed facts state CCTV footage captures the victim and the alleged kidnappers arriving at 3.25am, where Mr Mancuso was detained for nine hours.

At 8.46am, police arrived at the warehouse and started surveillance before operatives from the NSW Police Tactical Operations Unit contained the scene and called on the occupants to exit.

About 10 minutes later, the alleged victim was sent out the front, but eight people remained in the location where three fires were allegedly lit within the unit in a bid to destroy evidence.

In sentencing, Judge Georgia Turner described the kidnapping as “brutal” and premeditated.

“It involved an invasion of the victim’s home … a place where they were entitled to feel safe and secure,” she said.

“[It was] psychologically distressing and traumatising; it was prolonged and involved an assault on [the victim] for more than one occasion.”

Judge Turner said she accepted Finau was “more like a follower in the offending than a leader,” and there was no evidence of his role in the home and the warehouse.

She noted his deprived and disadvantaged childhood, his diagnosis of oppositional defiant disorder, an intellectual disability and mental health conditions.

“The offender’s moral culpability is reduced,” Judge Turner said. “I do accept on balance that the offender has expressed genuine remorse.”

However, Judge Turner said Finau was on parole at the time of the offending for serious offences.

Finau was convicted and sentenced to jail for seven years and seven months with a non-parole period of four years and seven months. He will be eligible for parole from March 2026.
