Camden’s very own Camelot was transformed into Wayne Manor to help a six-year-old who has battled a horrific disease to realise his dreams.
Roman Djo, 6, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow which affects white blood cells.
Thankfully, he is currently in remission but it was not an easy journey to get there.
“When he was in treatment, there were good days and bad days depending on the chemo,” his mother, Natasha Djo, said.
“There were some long-term side effects as well, so when he was on chemo he got very sick and at one point we were in hospital for 19 days and he didn’t want to eat or drink so had to have a feeding tube.
“Even once he finished treatment, he was still very tired and even now he is better but for a normal six-year-old he gets tired.”
Mrs Djo said while Roman is in remission, he is still feeling the effects almost two years after going into remission. She said it was a tough time for the family unit to negotiate what was happening.
“It was devastating for us,” Mrs Djo said.
“We have a very good network of family and friends to help us but it was hard because someone always had to be home with Roman or at hospital with him and we had another son.
“Thankfully it was pre-Covid so we could have the help we needed, but both my husband and I had to reduce our workload and at times we barely saw each other because one of us was always at hospital.”
Mrs Djo said while it was a difficult time for the family, in many ways it brought them closer together.
“We have come out the other side and my partner and I still like each other so we must have done something right,” she joked.
Last Thursday, the Djo family was dropped off at Wayne Manor in a limousine, where he was tasked with helping Batman to save the day.
The family day took place at Camden’s very own Camelot, a heritage-listed former residence, race horse stud and homestead located at Kirkham Lane, Narellan.
After solving some puzzles and finding the clues, Batman then took Roman on a ride in the Batmobile before police arrived to thank Roman for his help.
“The day was a bit delayed due to Covid but it worked well because he was well enough to enjoy it,” Mrs Djo said.
The day came about thanks to Make-A-Wish foundation and Roman’s wish to meet Batman stems from his love of superheroes and action figures.
