A man who enjoyed a boozy afternoon at his mate’s home soon found himself in strife after police clocked him speeding more than 50km/h over the limit on a major road.

Robert James White, 37, fronted Picton Local Court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to mid-range drink driving and speeding more than 45 km/h over the limit.

The Mt Annan man was caught on July 27 after police saw him speeding along the Camden Bypass at 139km/h in a 80km/h zone.

They pulled him over at the Liz Kernohan Dr intersection and police facts state White’s eyes were bloodshot while his balance and movements were sluggish.

When asked about his drinking, White told police he had consumed five 375ml bottles of full-strength Carlton Draught Beer over about three hours.

He was breath tested and returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.104, more than double the legal limit.

“As a result of the excessive speed of (White) along with his level of intoxication, he placed himself and other road users at significant risk,” police facts state.

“Should he have had to take evasive action to avoid a collision, police are of the belief that he would not have had the time to react accordingly.”

Magistrate David Degnan warned White he could face up to 12 months in jail for his actions.

“The [blood alcohol] reading is aggravated by the fact you are travelling at a very high speed,” he said. “I haven’t decided yet whether a custodial sentence will be imposed.”

The matter has been adjourned after Degnan ordered a sentencing assessment report and White will learn his fate next month.
