A person has died after a blazing house fire near Picton this morning.

Emergency services were called to a property at the intersection of Menangle and Picton Roads, Razorback, just before 4.30am on Wednesday, after reports of a fire.

Sadly despite the efforts of firefighter crews to attack the blaze, a resident of the home was found dead.

Wollondilly Shire Council mayor Matt Gould said the news of the death was absolutely devastating for the community.

“Anything time something like this happens, it is just heartbreaking,” he told The Macarthur Chronicle.

“As a community we have gone through so much in the last couple of years and then to have something like this happen, how do you put into words that impact.

“It’s heartbreaking for the families and loved ones. It’s devastating for the emergency service crews who responded. It’s just horrible.”

At 4.15am Fire and Rescue NSW Communications received calls to a house alight at a property on Menangle Rd Razorback just near the intersection with Picton Rd.

Picton FRNSW crews and Camden Rural Fire Service crews raced to the scene to find the home engulfed in flames.

They were joined shortly afterwards by the crew from Camden FRNSW who assisted, running hose lines some distance to be able to attack the fire.

Two Fire and Rescue NSW crews in breathing apparatus also helped to fight the fire and were assisted by RFS supplying water. Despite the efforts of emergency services, an occupant of the building passed away in the blaze.

The victim has not been formally identified. Officers from Camden Police Area Command also attended and a crime scene has been established, which will be examined by specialist forensic police.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and detectives have commenced an investigation into the circumstances and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Mr Gould acknowledged the impact a death in the region could have on residents and encouraged anyone in the community who was struggling in the wake of the news to reach out to mental health services should they need help.

“There is always someone to help, so please reach out if you need,” he said.
