Construction has started on a $4.86m “state-of-the-art indoor cricket facility” to upgrade one of southwest Sydney’s “premier sporting” complexes.
Macarthur cricketers will soon be able to train at the centre being built at Raby Oval, with the project set to include six lanes and nets, increasing the capacity of the facility for all-weather training year-round.
Campbelltown Mayor Dr George Greiss said Raby Sports Complex was one of Campbelltown’s premier sporting precincts with a fantastic reputation across Sydney.
“The new indoor cricket centre will supplement the existing world-class facilities and increase opportunities for high performance training and coaching in the region to ensure the next generation of local cricket stars can learn and develop their skills,” he said.
Dr Greiss was joined by officials from Campbelltown-Camden District Cricket, Cricket NSW, Cricket Australia and Leppington MP Nathan Hagarty to turn the sod on the project on Monday.
“The Macarthur region is home some of the best up-and-coming athletes in the nation and this project will ensure they can hone their craft right at home,” Mr Hagarty said.
“This project will complement the investments the NSW Government is making in sports and youth in my electorate of Leppington and the southwest.”
Cricket NSW chief executive Lee Germon said Raby Indoor Cricket Centre was another great example of several stakeholders working together in an effort to improve infrastructure that would help inspire more people to play and love cricket.
The project is funded by Campbelltown Council, the NSW Government through the NSW Greater Cities Sport Facility Fund and NSW ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Cricket Legacy Fund as well as Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW.
The redevelopment is expected to be completed in late 2024.
