The promoter of Sydney’s newest music festival Out of Bounds is aspiring for the event to be a landmark of the country’s music scene.

Several thousand people will descend on a southwest Sydney athletics precinct next weekend for the inaugural all-age event, headlined by hometown rockers The Rubens and hip-hop artist ILLY.

Promoter Johann Ponniah says the Campbelltown festival, which has been tagged ‘a fest for the south west’ has the potential to be a key part of the region’s identity.

“I want Out of Bounds to be a festival that people from Campbelltown and the surrounding areas are proud to host,” he said.

“I want this festival to be a landmark in the Australian festival scene – we understand that will come with time but that is where our hopes and ambitions lie.”

Crowd-surfing and crowd-pleasing tracks will feature in a high-energy performance by hometown heroes The Rubens, who expect to see old pals mixed in with their parents rocking out in the crowd.

“Getting to come back and play a hometown show is mad,” said frontman Sam Margin.

“It’s kind of cool to know there is something like this is happening. I don’t remember there being a huge amount of opportunities locally (as an emerging band). It was kinda you had to go the city and play, and that’s fine, I get that.

“I wish this was around when we were coming up but better late than never.”

Campbelltown hip hop artist Rops1 will also perform on stage.

The five-piece band plans to perform new single Live in Life for the first time live.

Alex the Astronaut, Mallrat, Trophy Eyes, Waax and Lex Deluxe will perform across two stages, with gates opening at 1pm on Saturday. $10 from each ticket sold is being donated to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal.
