Oran Park Public School at more than double capacity
The staggering growth of Oran Park Public School has continued to surge, with the six-year old school expected to be above double capacity from today.
The staggering growth of Oran Park Public School has continued to surge, with the school, less than six years old, at more than double capacity.
Year 1 to 6 went back to school today (Wednesday).
Stacked with 42 demountable classrooms, the school is expected to host about 1500 students in 2019. The school’s current capacity is 700.
A Department of Education spokesman said the school is prepared to cater for the growing school community.
“The exact number of enrolments for 2019 will only be known in mid to late February, but currently the school is expecting approximately 1500 students, including approximately 280 kindergarten students in approximately 14 classes,” he said.
“(The school) currently has 42 demountable classrooms, which have enabled the school to keep operating on its existing site during a major redevelopment which has a scope of 24 new permanent classrooms.
“The school operated successfully late last year under similar conditions.”
Camden’s finest acknowledged on Australia Day
John Ryan: ‘Australia is the most precious to me’
In the past decade Oran Park Public School has been the fastest growing primary school in the Camden area, followed by Spring Farm Public School, Camden South Public School and Leppington Public School.
Camden state Labor candidate Sally Quinnell said there was no excuse for the current predicament.
“This is just an example of a government being reactive, instead of proactive,” she said. “How many children are we expecting in this area?”
“What this situation does is make it hard for teachers to do what they do best, which is teach.”
The spiralling rise in enrolments has seen parents booted from the playground during drop off and pick up times.
“We cannot safely or logistically accommodate parents/carers or others in the playground in the mornings or in the afternoons before 3pm,” a Facebook post by Oran Park Public School stated.
Twenty-four permanent classrooms are due to be completed next year.
A second primary school to service the Oran Park community, located in Catherine Field, won’t open until 2022.
The under-construction Oran Park High School is expected to be in operation next year.
