Get ready to see pink this month as the Oran Park community throws its support behind a worthy cause.

October 1 marks the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this year businesses, sporting groups and community members are showing their support by getting involved in Pink Up Oran Park.

Camden Council is also painting the town pink throughout October, installing a pink ribbon and lighting it up above entry doors at the administration centre in Oran Park.

The initiative aims to increase awareness of breast cancer and raise funds for the McGrath Foundation, which supports individuals and families affected by breast cancer.

All proceeds will go towards the charity to hire more nurses to support patients.

Space Real Estate in Oran Park is one of the local businesses leading the campaign.

Principal Sudha Sudharshan said the agency was heavily involved in the community and was approached by the McGrath Foundation to lend its support to the cause.

For five months now, employees have been driving around town in two cars wrapped entirely in pink to help raise awareness.

Mr Sudharshan said while some initially “laughed or shook their head”, the cars had generated more discussion around breast cancer and the services available to patients.

“The idea is I got them to notice. That’s my objective and therefore I’ve reached that,” he said.

Camden Council has also planted pink flowers in boxes located in Argyle St and around the council’s administration building and library.

There are also pink flowers planted in the roundabouts at the intersection of Argyle and Elizabeth streets, Camden and Welling Drive and Waterworth Drive, Mount Annan.

The council will host a staff morning tea to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation and purchase pink wristbands for each staff member to wear throughout October.

A waste truck has been wrapped in pink and has breast cancer awareness messaging, local businesses are encouraged to dress their shop fronts pink for October and, together with Oran Park Town, light pole banners have been installed along Central Ave and Dairy St, Oran Park.

Camden Mayor Theresa Fedeli said the council was approached by Space Real Estate, Oran Park, earlier this year, to support the Pink Up Your Town initiative.

“It’s such an important initiative to get behind because, sadly, we all know someone who has been affected by cancer. Breast cancer is actually the most common diagnosed cancer and it’s currently the second leading cause of cancer death in Australian women,” Cr Fedeli said.

“That’s why I am so proud to support this fantastic initiative. All the funds raised will be donated to the McGrath Foundation, to hire additional nurses to provide the best care for breast cancer patients.”
