The NSW Government has promised an extra 350 parking spaces at Leppington station, just months after Labor announced they would fund 300 new spaces.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian visited Leppington this week to announce $9 million would be set aside to deliver at least 350 additional car spaces for rail commuters.

The new spaces will add to the existing 900 spaces at the station.

The announcement comes just five weeks out from the State Election.

“As a Government we are doing all we can to encourage people to use public transport and extra car spaces give commuters a good reason to do so,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Macquarie Fields Liberal candidate Zahurul Quazi welcomed the announcement.

“The existing northern and southern ground level car parks will be reconfigured to create more than 70 additional spaces, while work is under way to secure more land to extend the northern car park to provide another 290 car spaces,” Mr Quazi said.

But Prestons resident and Liverpool independent candidate Michael Andjelkovic, a community campaigner for better parking, said neither the Liberal nor Labor Party’s commitments would be enough to address commuter woes.

“I welcome the decision by the Premier and I’m glad to see the southwest is being acknowledged but 350 spaces just doesn’t cut it,” he said.

“Mark Latham hit the nail on the head when he said we need about 1500 to 2000 extra spots.

“Our area is still growing … we’re talking about another 250,000 to 300,000 people still to come and they’re promising an extra 350 parking spaces?”
