A PROPOSAL to build a high-rise tower on Queen St at the rear of Campbelltown’s historic CBC building has been revived in the Land and Environment Court.
Western Sydney City Planning Panel rejected the initial 21-storey proposal in March this year after the NSW Heritage Council expressed concern the building’s construction would damage the state heritage-listed CBC building.
At the time the proponents, Auchenflower Investments, attempted to submit a revised application but the planning panel ruled it could only assess the proposal before it.
The new plans have since been lodged with Campbelltown Council as part of an appeal to the Land and Environment Court.
Planner Michael Brown of Michael Brown Planning Strategies said the proposal was the same one the proponents attempted to put to the planning panel in March.
“The new plans bring the building down to 16 storeys and from 101 apartments to 72,” he said.
The basement levels have also been reduced from three to four with a reduction in carparking spaces from 139 to 103.
Under the plans, the state heritage-listed CBC bank building — which was Campbelltown’s first bank — would be restored.
The restoration would see the removal of several post-World War II additions to bring the building back to its original state.

At the planning panel meeting in March, Campbelltown and Airds Historical Society president Kay Hayes asked the panel to reject the building to protect the historic value of the area.
“If the CBC development is approved it will be the start of the destruction of our heritage and the precinct as a whole,” Mrs Hayes said.
The original application was refused after the NSW Heritage Council would not give its approval due to concerns excavation work to build the underground car park would damage the CBC Bank Building.
Approval from the heritage council is required for any development on a heritage listed site.
The plans are currently on public exhibition with Campbelltown Council.
