A dad’s afternoon at the pub on Father’s Day ended in the back of a police van after he refused to leave the venue before threatening to “f--k” an officer’s wife and kill his children.
Nathan John Noonan, 42, pleaded guilty to two counts of intimidating a police officer in the execution of duty, excluded person failing to leave premises when required, excluded person re-entering the vicinity of licensed premises, and failing to comply with directions.
On September 4, 2022, Noonan was at the Welcome Inn Thirlmere with friends when he argued with another patron and was asked to leave.
He refused to leave, so management called the police, and officers convinced him to go, took him home to Tahmoor, and warned him not to return.
Noonan then returned to the Welcome Inn and stood at the back entrance.
Management refused him entry, and he went and sat in the back of a car parked outside, where police found him later.
After arguing with officers, Noonan was arrested and, at Narellan police station, continued to rant and yell at police, telling two officers, “If I see you in the street, you’re nothing. I’ll get you”.
He then yelled at one of them, “I’ll f--k the f--k out of your missus and f--king smash her like she should be. Then I’ll kill your kids”.
Then to the other officer, he said, “I will smash your face in when I find you, and I promise you I will find you. You’re a f--king faggot, you redhead f--k”.
After Noonan banged his head multiple times, he was transferred to Campbelltown Hospital.
At Picton Local Court on Wednesday, lawyer Benjamin Goh said Noonan was brought up in an environment where “drugs and alcohol loomed large” and had been diagnosed with bipolar, PTSD, alcohol abuse disorder and anxiety.
Mr Goh said Noonan’s moral culpability was “somewhat reduced”.
“He is absolutely disgusted with his behaviour,” he said. “He’s a hardworking man. He’s a hardworking father, a beloved husband.”
Magistrate David Degnan acknowledged that Noonan had dealt with some “personal matters” in recent years that would have been traumatic.
“Police officers are entitled to go about their work without being threatened,” he said.
“When you want to threaten their family, that makes it doubly worse.”
Noonan was convicted on all charges, fined $3050, sentenced to a two-year community correction order and ordered to complete 200 hours of community service.
