Move over Usain Bolt! Our cutest speedsters set a fast pace in Pug Run

USAIN BOLT might be the fastest man on earth but the cutest sprinters in the Macarthur region have four legs and a wet nose.

Campbelltown Pug Club

PUGS from the Macarthur region came together for a meet and greet and a casual race day with other dog breeds over the weekend.

More than 50 pooches lined-up and ran as fast as their little legs would carry them in the inaugural Pug Run at St Helens Park on Sunday.

There was no gold medals but an overload of cuteness at the Campbelltown Pugs and South West Group event aimed at uniting dog lovers and raising funds for animal rescue.

Some of the pooches were speedsters, some just happy to jump around and some were just plain sleepy.

There may have been some piddling on the starting line.

Group member Christopher Pienaar, who entered two pugs into the races, said both four and two legged guests enjoyed the day.

He was happy to see that the event raised about $300 for local rescue organisation Denise at Paws.

“It was far better than we expected and we had more than 50 dogs and at least 100 people there,” he said.

“It opened people’s eyes to how many pugs are in the area and what our group is all about.

“We were really happy with the turnout and we’ll make it an annual thing.”

Races were also held for non-pugs and other breeds also excited to join in the fun.

More than $300 was raised which will support rescue organisation Denise at Paws.

Organisers would like to thank the Animal Trust Society, Pawshake, Macarthur Housecall Vets and CSA Financial Solutions for their contribution to the event.

Mr Pienaar said pugs make great pets because of their affectionate nature, big personality and patience with children.

“Pugs are not as dumb as some people make out; they can be pretty smart and are easy to train,” he said.

“They’re very loyal and loving pets that are in tune with your emotions, love to snuggle and don’t require too much exercise.

“If you’re looking for a companion dog then they are the way to go.”
