Mountain bike rider rescued at Boronia Rd, Kentlyn

Emergency services hiked more than an hour to rescue a man after he became injured while mountain bike riding in southwest Sydney.

A 37-year-old man has been taken to Liverpool Hospital after a joint operation was undertaken to rescue him from bushland at Kentlyn.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Boronia Rd on Thursday just after 11.30am after reports that a man was injured.

NSW Ambulance Inspector David Kynaston said the man was mountain bike riding in bushland when he took a jump and fell from the bike after landing.

“He sustained an open laceration to his proximal tibia fibula region of his left leg,” he said.

“We responded to multiple resources including our transporting ambulance, two special operation paramedic teams, supervisor and a rescue helicopter.

“The helicopter winched in a paramedic to assess the patient and the best plan was to utilise members from NSW Police, Fire and Rescue NSW and Rural Fire Service to carry him out.’’

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Scott Dodson said police, ambulance and firefighters converged on the entrance of a popular track where they formulated the plan to hike to the rider.

“We have a device called a mule which is essentially a single-wheel bicycle which we attach to the stretcher which means we can transport the patient out safely with less risk to the firefighters,” Supt Dodson said.

“We worked with NSW Ambulance to package the person up safely on to a stretcher and then we walked them out to be transported via ambulance.

“The crews had to hike about 35 minutes each way to get the patient out.”

The man was transported to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition.

Supt Dodson said the incident was another example of emergency services working together and also served as a reminder to ensure you could call for help at any time.

“You need to make sure you tell people where you go before you go,” he said.

“Download the Emergency Plus app because it gives you a better chance of being located, especially in remote areas.”
