A Brazilian national with a passion for motorcycles told a court he “did not realise how fast he was going”, despite travelling at 191km/h in an 80km/h zone.
Lucas Zarpellao will not be allowed to ride a bike or drive a car for the next two years after he pleaded guilty to the speeding offence at Picton Local Court today.
The 29-year-old was travelling on his Yamaha 600cc on Camden Valley Way — between Raby Rd and Catherine Fields Rd — last month when police measured his speed at 175km/h, quickly rising to a maximum of 191km/h.
Police observed Zarpellao’s speeding from a vantage point on the opposite side of the road for about 1km before alerting nearby officers in Narellan to stop the motorcycle.
In a letter to the court, Zarpellao, who has been in the country for a year, said he was sorry for the speeding offence.
“I am extremely sorry for what I have done, I did not realise how fast I was going,” he said.
“Reflecting on my terrible mistake, I know that I could have put others or myself in danger.”
Magistrate Ian Cheetham warned Zarpellao not to get behind the wheel of a car or ride a motorbike while serving the two-year suspension.
“This is a very serious offence to be travelling at that speed, it’s lucky nothing worse happened,” he said.
Zarpellao was also fined $750.
