A judge has heard a Minto man, who evaded police for almost a year, was “mostly” running from outlaw bikies whose drugs he had failed to protect.

Daniel Comer, 33, appeared at a sentencing at Campbelltown District Court yesterday.

He had previously pleaded guilty to 21 offences including commercial drug supply, firearm offences and resisting arrest.

In July 2016 more than 1kg of methamphetamine, 2.6kg of cannabis, 330g of MDMA, 14g of cocaine, 110g of MDA and 30 Viagra tabs were seized from a Minto industrial site.

Mr Comer had told police he was operating a vending machine business from the location.

His defence barrister told the court the property was used as a storage facility, with the drugs “kept on the behalf of others … associates of outlaw motorcycle clubs”.

About six weeks later Mr Comer failed to appear at Campbelltown Court to answer the charges, evading police detection for almost a year until he was arrested at an Eschol Park house.

His defence barrister told Judge Townsden of Mr Comer’s difficult upbringing and asked for a sentence which “is not crushing of this man”.

“It is obviously the case that these are very serious offences,” he said. “There is some prospect he would re-engage with the community.

“At his age and stage in life, there is still some hope.”

The prosecutor said there was little hope of rehabilitation noting Mr Comer had committed serious offences while on parole such as threatening a Chipping Norton businessman.

The matter will return to court for sentencing at the Downing Centre on May 17.
