A woman has died after a car swerved and rolled onto its roof to avoid another vehicle at Wilton on Sunday afternoon in what a community leader has described as a tragedy.
Emergency services were called to the Hume Mwy, near Picton Rd, following reports of a crash shortly after midday.
Camden police found a wreckage and were told a car swerved to avoid another car and rolled.
Despite the efforts of responding police and NSW Ambulance paramedics, the rear passenger of the car died at the scene.
The woman, aged in her 20s, has not been formally identified.
The driver of the car that rolled and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to Liverpool Hospital for treatment and for mandatory testing.
A crime scene was established and investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Wollondilly Council deputy mayor Matthew Deeth said it was a tragic end to the weekend.
“It is always incredibly tragically sad when we hear of these fatalities that occur on our roads,” he said.
“Every person in our community has the right to be able to get home safe to their loved ones.
“Investigations are ongoing and we hope that everyone can respect for the grieving family and our hearts certainly go out to them because it will be a difficult for some time to come.”
Mr Deeth said fatal crashes were an “all too frequent event” especially on the Hume Hwy between Campbelltown and the Wollondilly local government area.
“We need the relevant authorities to look at that section of the road an improve the safety,” he said. “Our local roads come to a halt when we see the traffic diverted so we need investment.
“When you are talking about another 100,000 people in the next one to two decades it is critical for the government to come here and look at the roads.”
A motorist said multiple crash scene investigators were at the scene on Sunday afternoon and conducting their investigation.
The southbound lanes of the motorway were closed for most of the afternoon, with northbound lanes heavily affected and traffic banked up for kilometres.
The road opened late Sunday afternoon after the crash site had been cleared.
