CANINE’S may be man’s best friend, but reptiles are fast becoming a popular choice for pets, enthusiast Rhonda Glover says.

As the president of the Macarthur Herpetological Society, Ms Glover said she had seen an increase in the availability of reptiles and their popularity as companion animals.

“Reptile ownership is becoming one of the biggest hobbies worldwide,” she said.

“They’re fascinating pets to watch and there’s something for everyone.

“When you say reptiles people automatically think snakes, but there’s probably a reptile out there for everyone if they take the time to look.”

Among some of the options are geckos, bearded dragons, blue tongue lizards, turtles and snakes.

“Nowadays there are a lot more types of reptiles readily available as pets,” she said.

“You’ve got animals that are really interactive, like bearded dragons and blue tongues that are very popular.

“They can live for more than 20 years so they are on par with dogs and they’ve got such personalities.

Ms Glover said the perks of choosing a reptile included being able to hand rear and feed your pet, as well as enjoying less responsibilities while they go through hibernation in winter.

“For a blue tongue, you can spend a couple of hours holding them and they’ll be tame,” she said,

“In the winter you could have as many as three months where you don’t have to see, feed or clean your pet; It makes for a great time to take a holiday!”

Residents, including children, who are interested in speaking to breeders, learning more about reptiles, pet care and their options are welcome to meet with the Herpetological Society.
