CAMPBELLTOWN Council has agreed to lend a hand and help rehome animals found in Camden temporarily while Camden Council explores its pound facility options.

The decision at last night’s meeting followed the announcement by Liverpool Council that it would be taking over the animal care facility at Renbury Farm, where Camden Council currently houses its animals.

Camden Council will be hoping to place a $250,000 demountable building on the site.

Negotiations on a shared service agreement will take place where Camden Council will ask for the Rose St’s facility to extend its opening hours from 9am-noon on a Saturday to 9am-4pm on both weekend days.

But it is unclear if this will occur as one of the recommendation items agreed to by Campbelltown Council is that it would not be financially disadvantaged in an agreement.

Campbelltown Liberal Councillor Ted Rowell said he was looking forward to a report coming back to council on the agreement terms.

“I have no issues with this becoming a regional facility,” he said at the meeting.

“Camden now has nowhere to place their animals and I think this is a great thing for all animals in Camden.”

The business paper tabled at the meeting noted that the agreement would provide a foundation for future discussions on a permanent regional facility for the Macarthur area.

Campbelltown independent Councillor Paul Lake has spoken in favour of the idea a number of times.

“The government is always saying council should work together and share resources,” he said.

“The Rose St facility will eventually outgrow itself but I’d like to eventually see a facility in an appropriate location with modern facilities to service the entire Macarthur region.”
