A new project that plans to deliver more than 1200 new apartments in southwest Sydney is on public exhibition.

Landcom is planning a new neighbourhood at Macarthur Gardens North which will deliver a mix of new homes which will include some affordable and diverse housing adjacent to Macarthur Station.

The project will see around 1250 new apartments, a new civic plaza, a central park, active play spaces as well as more than 13ha of open space.

The dwellings will include a mix of apartments and terraces up to 10-storeys high to appeal to smaller households, and provide more opportunity for households to buy their own home.

A spokesman for Landcom said demand for housing was strong throughout NSW, particularly in western Sydney, where this development would help address housing supply and improve affordability.

“Landcom has incorporated recommendations from the community consultation including increasing the open space, establishing a pedestrian walkway from Macarthur Station through the site to Macarthur Heights, Western Sydney University, and the TAFE,” he said.

“Pending approvals, work will begin in mid-2023 with sales to commence in 2024.

“The community will be kept informed as the project progresses.”

Documents tendered to council state the neighbourhood would contribute to Campbelltown’s housing target without putting pressure on the local street network.

This would be due to the site’s proximity to public transport, regional cycle paths and main roads including Narellan Rd, Appin Rd, and the Hume Highway.

“Consistent with the Western City District Plan, the proposal will place residents within 30-minutes of their jobs as the site is within the health and education precinct with future connection to the Western Sydney Aerotropolis,” the report said.

According to Landcom, they have used feedback from the community to update the project and this has including increasing the area of vegetation that will be preserved to protect ecologically sensitive bushland and the natural creek corridor.

The development application for the project is currently on public exhibition.

Sydney Western City Planning Panel is the determination authority for this development application.

Anyone who wishes to comment on the project should make a submission to council by close of business on April 18.
