Approval for a $20 million shopping centre has been granted in a bid to cater for a growing community in southwest Sydney.
Wollondilly Shire Council signed off on the development of a new shopping centre on Silverdale Rd, Silverdale that is expected to be open by the end of this year.
The land was rezoned in recent years following council’s decision to set a new strategic direction for the town and expand the commercial footprint.
Upon completion the Silverdale Shopping Centre will be anchored by a full-line Woolworths, with 30 specialty retail shops and 430 customer parking spaces.
Council’s CEO Ben Taylor said the project would be the next step in realising the vision they have for Silverdale.
“We expect the expanded centre to become a focal point for this growing community,” he said.
“It will give residents a wider range of options in the local area, reduce travel time and create space for much needed services.”
“Council will continue to work with the developer as they progress their project and we look forward to seeing a supermarket, speciality stores, alfresco eating areas and underground parking all become a reality.”
According to documents tendered to council, the centre will be constructed adjacent to the existing shopping centre.
Existing tenancies will either relocate to the new shopping centre or remain within the current centre but be established within a refurbished tenancy.
“The IGA tenant will relocate to the new shopping centre however the focus of the produce will shift to a delicatessen,” the document read.
“Woolworths (or equivalent) will be the major tenant in the new shopping complex and the existing liquor store will form part of this shop which means there will continue to be only one liquor store on site.”
According to Wollondilly Shire Council, the project will capitalise on the current and ongoing road safety upgrades to Silverdale Road.
Council’s road designers will work with the proponent’s design team to minimise duplication of reconstruction of the road and make the most of government grants.
The new centre will also connect into the expanded footpath network, bus stops and other traffic safety measures.
