Learner driver’s wild police chase in southwest Sydney

A teenage learner driver who led police on a wild chase through the streets of southwest Sydney in his mother’s unregistered and ‘unserviceable’ Ford Focus has appeared before the court.

A teenager learner driver who led police on a wild chase through the suburban streets of southwest Sydney has fronted Campbelltown Court to answer to his mounting rap sheet.

In the space of five days, 19-year-old Jamaal Zadro, of Leumeah, illegally drove his mum’s unregistered, uninsured and ‘unserviceable’ Ford Focus twice.

Last October, Zadro was driving the unregistered car through Ingleburn when the car came to the attention of police. The teenager initially pulled over, before accelerating away and racing away from the pursuing police. He mounted a dirt median strip on Pembroke Rd and ultimately escaped arrest.

In the early hours of the following Sunday morning, a drunk Zadro was again behind the wheel of the unregistered Ford Focus when the car was pulled over by police patrolling the Ingleburn area.

His mother, Amelia Zadro, was in the passenger seat at the time and police alleged she told them she was also a learner driver.

The teenager will be sentenced on more than 15 charges in March.

Police said when the car stopped, they noticed steam billowing under the bonnet and liquids leaking.

Court documents say Mr Zadro admitted he had “consumed an unknown amount of nips and free drinking from the bottle” between 11.30pm-1.30am and hadn’t eaten any food.

Zadro has previously pleaded guilty to police pursuit, two counts of driving unregistered, two counts of driving uninsured, two counts of driving without instructor, two counts of not displaying ‘L’ plates, reckless driving and special category drink driving.

In Campbelltown Local Court on Monday, the teenager pleaded guilty to possessing a 31.5cm knife at Macquarie Fields train station on January 8. He has also previously pleaded guilty to a shoplifting offence and being a passenger in a stolen car in March last year.

Magistrate Ian Guy ordered Zadro to undergo a sentence assessment report and he will return to Campbelltown Local Court on March 30 to be sentenced for all charges.
