A Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Campbelltown Hospital could soon become a reality, with a $10 million election commitment announced by federal Labor today.

Dr Freelander said it was a fantastic announcement for the people of south west Sydney.

“We transfer over 300 children a year from Campbelltown Hospital who need intensive care,” he said.

“Most of those children need short term intensive care, a few days of respiratory support and they’re fine and we know we can provide this service at Campbelltown given the resources and training to do so.

“The world is changing, there is a huge population moving into south west Sydney and they deserve the very best of medical care.”

Hume Labor candidate and mum of three Aiofe Champion said a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit would be a “life changer”.

“It will change our lives and it will change our childrens lives,” she said.

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit would be delivered as part of the major works, valued at $632 million, currently being undertaken at Campbelltown Hospital.

Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen said a federal Labor government would work alongside all parties to establish the Paediatric Unit at Campbelltown Hospital.

“Labor will put patients before politics and work closely with the South Western Sydney Local Health District and the NSW Government on the design and construction of this facility,” federal shadow treasurer Chris Bowen said.
