A mother and son duo are the faces behind the counter at a new Campbelltown eatery, and they are ready to help inject life into one of the suburb’s main streets.

Jenny Tran and Raymond Mai opened their store Crown Tea + Banh Mi serving Vietnamese cuisine at Queen Street after 12 months of hurdles.

“Covid made everything harder, we had so many obstacles,” he said.

“We had been paying rent on this space for a while but we couldn’t get the things we needed because of supply issues.

“All the businesses around us were asking when we were going to open and I kept saying ‘soon, hopefully soon’.”

Ms Tran said the delays made things harder, but her son’s positive attitude and drive helped them get through.

“He’s the best business partner,” she said.

The pair are from the Cabramatta area, but have spent a lot of time in Campbelltown and want to help restore some vibrancy to its main streets after Covid.

“At night in Cabramatta, you can see how busy it is and there is so much life,” Ms Tran said.

“We don’t see that here as much so we want to help bring that.

“At night-time, there isn’t really a place for kids and families to hang out but this can be it, this is the place.”

Mr Mai said this was their first business, and while they were excited to be finally opening there were a lot of nerves as well.

He said they had planned to do a soft opening on Tuesday without any major promotions to ease into operating the business.

“We were so nervous to open, but then we couldn’t believe how many people came in,” he said.

“We sold out of 300 rolls in the morning, we had to do an emergency run to our bakery.

“It seemed like it blew up on social media and it has been so amazing and exciting to have the support of people from the community.”

Ms Tran said she didn’t expect the support from the community, but it just goes to show how “amazing” the people of Campbelltown are.
