Aussie road rules you’ve probably never heard of

A man who grabbed his bum bag and ran from the scene after causing a car crash that left a woman injured will soon learn his fate.

Jan Dawood, 40, fronted Picton Local Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to failing to stop and assist after impact causing injury, negligent driving, driving while disqualified and not giving particulars to an injured person.

A further charge of not keeping left of oncoming motor vehicles was withdrawn.

Court documents show that on September 10, police were called to Seidler Parade, Oran Park after reports of a crash.

Police saw Dawood’s Black Range Rover had collided with another car on the right side of the road, but he could not be found at the scene.

It was about 10 minutes later when he returned, the police asked him to produce a driver’s license. “I don’t have one” he said.

The agreed facts show that checks revealed he had been convicted of a police pursuit in 2021 and had been disqualified from driving until September 2023.

On body worn camera, police asked why he left the scene and he said “I got scared and wanted to let my wife know”. They asked why he was driving unlicensed and he said “because I was checking my wife’s car”.

Court documents state that CCTV showed Dawood driving to the right side of the road and colliding with the victim’s vehicle, before he got out of the car, grabbed his bum bag and ran from the scene towards Rodwell Dr.

The victim had a broken wrist and attended Campbelltown Hospital for treatment.

Magistrate Mark Douglass ordered a sentencing assessment report and the matter returns to Picton Local Court for sentencing next month.
