A woman and child have died following a horror two-vehicle crash on the Hume Motorway in Sydney’s south-west, in what has been described as a “heart-wrenching” incident.

Emergency services were called to the Hume Motorway, Menangle Park, about 11.20am and found a northbound cement truck and a silver SUV crashed in the northbound lanes.

The female driver and a child died at the scene.

A second child was flown to Westmead Children’s Hospital in a critical condition after being intubated by paramedics.

The man driving the truck was not physically injured. He has been taken for mandatory testing.

Officers attached to Campbelltown City Police Area Command have established a crime scene which will be examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

According to Live Traffic, the Hume Motorway remains closed in both directions.

A large section of the road has been completely shut off as emergency vehicles remain on scene, and there is heavy congestion either side of the crash site.

Highway patrol cars have even been posted at smaller side streets, such as Medhurst Rd, to direct traffic away and keep the scene clear.

Southbound drivers are being diverted at Narellan Rd, while northbound motorists are being diverted at Picton Rd.

Heavy vehicles in both directions should use Appin Rd and M1 Princes Motorway instead.

NSW Ambulance Chief Superintendent Mark Gibbs said the scene was “challenging” for paramedics.

“This was a challenging scene with two patients deceased and another young child who was trapped in the vehicle,” he said.

“Paramedics and two specialist medical teams worked alongside Fire and Rescue NSW to free the child who was then intubated on scene before being airlifted.

“This is a very tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of those involved.”

Campbelltown MP Greg Warren said he was still processing the news, and the loss of life was “absolutely heart-wrenching”.

“It’s devastating when there is any loss of life in these circumstances, it is always a tragedy, but it’s especially tragic when children are involved,” he said.

“I can’t begin to imagine what the family and loved ones of those who have passed in this tragedy are going through, but my heart goes out to them”.

Mr Warren said the tragic loss of the woman and child would be felt by Campbelltown and the broader Macarthur community.

“When tragedies like this occur, I think it affects all of us,” he said.

“Whether we know those involved or not, I know everyone feels it.”
