A beloved father is being remembered by the community as a “one-of-a-kind” man with “the biggest smile” after he was killed in a horror accident in Sydney’s southwest during wild storms.
Emergency crews rushed to the intersection of the Hume Hwy and Picton Rd at Wilton on Thursday afternoon after 10 vehicles, including three trucks, were involved in a crash causing a major pileup as torrential rain poured.
Beloved Campbelltown father-of-two Nick Parkes had been driving home from work when he was killed in the horror crash.
The crash forced all northbound traffic to come to a complete stop and the closed one southbound lane.
Mr Parkes’s mother, Susan, has remembered her only son as having “a free spirited attitude and the biggest smile you fall in love with”.
“Nick was very hard working and loved his job,” she told the Macarthur Chronicle.
“He loved nature, adored all his kids and Lauren his soulmate.”
“Nick was one-of-a-kind and never said no to anyone.”
Ms Parkes said she will “never get over” the loss of her only son.
“The first thing I do every day will be to look at his photo and say good morning and the last thing I do at night will say goodnight my darling,” she said.
Tributes are flowing for Mr Parkes online, with Iron Spokes Brewing at Narellan holding a fundraiser on Sunday to support his family.
“This is such a tragedy the loss of a partner and a loving father far too soon,” the business wrote on Facebook.
“We are having a beer for Nick, next Sunday, October 24, all profits take over the bar between 2pm and 5pm … we’re calling it Have a Beer For Nick.”
Family members and friends have flooded Facebook with comments remembering Mr Parkes, who lived in the Campbelltown area his entire life.
School friends from Elderslie High School paid tribute to Mr Parkes, saying there were many “great memories” from school days.
A GoFundMe has since been launched to help Mr Parkes’s partner Lauren, their two children Imogen and Tobias, and stepchildren Dion and Tanah.
“The children were everything to him and he was everything for them,” the fundraiser reads.
“He was a hard working man who would sacrifice everything so that he could give his family everything they needed rather than spend money on himself.
“Nick was the sole provider for his family financially and he prided himself on making sure they never went without.”
The family has been devastated by the loss but have received an outpouring of love and support from friends, family and the community.
“We are raising money for Lauren and the children so that they can concentrate on dealing with this massive loss and not have to worry about income for a little while,” the GoFundMe said.
In just two days the fundraiser has raised more than $28,000 from 232 donations.
The Crash Investigation Unit have commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
