CAMDEN Rams first grade captain Chris Browne is recovering from surgery after suffering a sickening ankle injury in a Group 6 rugby league match on Saturday night, in an controversial off-the-ball incident.
Browne was expected to be released from hospital today after doctors operated to repair a devastating compound fracture and dislocation of the ankle.
The NSW Country Bulls and NSW Oztag representative player suffered the injury 12 minutes into the game against the Oakdale Workers side at Harvey Shephard Playing Field, Camden.
Oakdale’s Manu Asoava collided with Browne’s ankle off-the-ball, forcing the match to be abandoned, officials reported.
The injury has shaken the Camden club, with a number of teammates and friends visiting the 28-year-old Camden junior in hospital, club secretary Kylie Willis said.
“He is one of those special players the whole club gets behind,” she said.
“In this instance, it is more the person than the player. He is the heart and the soul of our club.
“He is an extremely talented player and enthusiastic member of the club, coaching our ladies League Tag and helping out our juniors at training.
“The whole club is devastated by the incident, with everyone there to support Chris and wife Kasey, who recently got married.”
The injury has ended Browne’s season, with fears it may result in the end of his rugby league career.
Group 6 executive officer Stephen Hazelton said he wished Browne a speedy recovery.
“It is a horrible injury for any player to have,” he said.
“The player involved was charged yesterday (Monday), and is due to face the judiciary on Thursday night.
“We are following due process, with emotions still running high after the game.”
