Algae blooms in Harrington Park Lake could soon be a thing of the past with a floating wetland to be installed in a bid to improve the water quality.

A blue-green algae bloom was discovered in the lake on two occasions last year leading to Camden Council to warn the community, and their pets, to not make any physical contact with the water.

Camden Council has erected warning signs twice in recent months after an algae bloom.

The federal government, through the Communities Environment Program, has provided $20,000 to establish the floating wetland which will improve water quality by removing nutrients and sediments from stormwater entering the lake.

Camden Mayor Theresa Fedeli said the project would protect the lake’s long term future.

“It’s important to maintain and improve our water quality, especially during a drought,” she said.

A program educating the community on how to reduce stormwater pollution will also take place in the near future.
