Gregory Hills is set to welcome the Macarthur region’s newest football club as the area continues to see player numbers shoot upwards.

The Macarthur Football Association plans to have a new club playing out of the newly constructed Cunningham Park as early as next season.

The new club will cater to the rapidly growing Gregory Hills community as well as surrounding growth areas alongside the already established Oran Park Rovers.

Macarthur Football Association general manager Salv Carmusciano said there had already been interest from the local community in helping to establish the new club.

“We will use this year to build momentum by running a number of promotional activities at the venue, including school holiday programs, ALDI MiniRoos Kick-Off and various tournaments and events throughout the year,” he said.

Carmusciano said new clubs were needed in the region as more and more players registered each year.

“The ever-growing popularity of our game means we are forever finding it hard to cater for the demand,” he said.

“The recent Football NSW Infrastructure Report indicates the game will need a further 700 pitches over the next 10 years to keep pace with the growing population.

“Gregory Hills is one of the fastest growing suburbs in NSW and Cunningham Park will provide an opportunity for the community to celebrate their love of the game.”

The MFA is expected to have 10,000 registered players before the season kicks off on March 30, many of those players being woman and girls.

“It looks like another year of growth, particular for female football,” Carmusciano said.

“We’re delighted by the interest in our first ever MiniRoos Girls League, where girls are offered the chance to play in girls only teams against other girls.

“We’ll have Girls Leagues for all age groups from under-6 to under-11 for the first time in Macarthur’s history.”

The field is currently being used as an overflow venue for games in the Macarthur competition and as a training venue for Macarthur Rams’ junior teams.
