A routine police patrol in Sydney’s southwest has taken a dangerous turn, with a gang of 10 “aggressive males” allegedly surrounding officers in a failed bid to free an arrested motorbike rider.
One of them, seen riding a “postman-style scooter”, allegedly damaged a police car in the process by jumping on the vehicle.
The incident began when two Campbelltown police officers claim to have spotted four young men riding unregistered motorbikes through sports fields at Rosemeadow Sports Complex last Wednesday.
Police say the quartet fled upon being approached, though one rider allegedly struggled to start his bike and resorted to running.
An officer arrested the 20-year-old man after a short chase.
But police allege the situation escalated quickly, with 10 males allegedly approaching approaching both the officers present and threatening to forcibly the arrested man from custody.
The group then allegedly surrounded the officers, prompting them to draw a gun and Taser with which to defend themselves while calling for back-up.
NSW Police said the group had fled after hearing sirens, but not before one male, seen riding a “postman-style scooter”, allegedly jumped on the bonnet and roof of the police car already at the scene.
While no officers were injured, the alleged vandal, who fled towards Copperfield Dr, is accused of rendering the car unusable by causing significant denting near the lights and on the bonnet.
NSW Police have since arrested a person alleged to be responsible for the damage and issued him with a court attendance notice, but the force did not specify his age or the charges in response to this masthead’s inquiries.
Meanwhile, the motorbike rider arrested at the beginning of the incident was taken to Campbelltown Police Station.
The 20-year-old man was charged with four offences, including being an unlicensed rider, and driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle, and served with a notice requiring him to front Campbelltown Local Court in November.
Police are continuing to investigate and are appealing for assistance from the community.
“Again, police are asking the public for any information which may identify any of the males involved in this incident or the locations as to where these motorcycles may be garaged,” a police spokeswoman said.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Campbelltown Police Station on 4620 1199, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be provided anonymously.
