A 140-year-old bank in southwest Sydney will be restored as part of a $55m development plan for the heart of Campbelltown.

Melbourne-based property developer Galeb Kilzi has been approved to restore the State Heritage Listed 1880s former CBC Bank Building on Queen St and build an eight-storey commercial building.

Colonial builders the Mansfield Brothers constructed the Victorian Italianate landmark in 1881, and it became Campbelltown’s first bank.

The developer will remove the 1960s extension on the left hand side and towards the rear and restore the building to the 1880s original style.

The multi-level building at the rear of the site will include 75 square metres of ground-floor retail, a two-level basement containing 22 car spaces, 54 bike spaces, end-of-trip facilities, a gymnasium, a conference and theatre room and breakout areas for exclusive tenant use.

“The endorsed development application will enable the reinvigoration and enhancement of the 1880 former CBC bank building to its original form, including its adaptive re-use,” Mr Kilzi said.

“The project is the first of its kind in the city and will assist in the revitalisation of Queen Street into a vibrant high street and economic hub.

“Our approach with the Queen Street project has taken into account not just the overall development and restoration associated with the site, but how it could enhance the broader neighbourhood, while preserving its heritage.”

The site sits within the commercial core of Campbelltown’s CBD and adjoins Campbelltown Mall.

The design director of FJMT Studio, Richard Francis-Jones, said the plans for 263 Queen St blended an innovative and sustainable workplace building with the adaptive reuse of the state heritage listed bank.

“Old and new are brought together within an imagined public realm of intimate gardens and welcoming retail,” he said.

“The ensemble of crafted indoor, outdoor, and elevated green spaces will foster collaboration, public enjoyment and enrich the historic centre of Campbelltown”.

Construction is expected to start next year.
