WHEN doctors told Camden parents Kylie and Adam Dixon that their son Jax had cancer last year, they thought it couldn’t get any worse.
But a day later it did, when after 13 visits to the doctor, Jax, now 3, was diagnosed with a rare cancerous form of melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy (MNTI).
There are only 485 cases of MNTI worldwide, but less than 10 people in the world have had malignant tumours, like Jax.
“They gave him pretty close to a zero per cent chance of survival,” Mrs Dixon said. “Our lives kind of stopped.”
The night before Jax had surgery to remove the tumour, the couple held “a party” with family and friends and said goodbye to their son.
Miraculously, Jax woke up and is now in the fight of his life undergoing chemotherapy while his parents try to spend as much time at home with him as possible.
Hoping to help their plight, is Kingsgrove cafe owner Stephenie Tsiotas who has organised a Christmas street party fundraiser on November 26 with a portable playland, jumping castle and DJ.
Mrs Tsiotas, who owns Meeting Morgan, said Mr Dixon had been delivering food to her cafe for four years. “Adam was just someone that always gave us the time of day,” she said.
“When we heard that his son was sick ... we just wanted to raise as much money as we could for them.”
Ms Tsiotas would like to raise at least $10,000 and will be donating all food and drink sales on the day to the cause.
Already $80,000 has been raised for the family through GoFundMe, and Mr Dixon said the support from strangers and friends alike had been overwhelming.
“It helped get us through some of the hardest times,” he said.
Mrs Dixon thanked everyone for their support which has allowed them to spend valuable family time together.
“We enjoy every single moment we have because we don’t know how much longer we have with him,” she said.
“We just hope he keeps going and surprises everyone.”
