A family moved from Mt Druitt to Camden and were surprised to find that home and car insurance increased due to “high risk” in the area.

A new resident was flummoxed to find that his family’s home and car insurance cost more in Camden than Mt Druitt.

The Camden South resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said his insurance provider Woolworths, described Camden as a “high risk” area.

“People always tell me that Mt Druitt is the worst place to insure things because its high risk, but it’s actually higher in Camden,” he said.

“The car insurance is what got me, here it is garaged whereas in Mt Druitt it was on the street, I just couldn’t believe it.

“I find it very strange and I can’t get an explanation for it; either we are the worst drivers in the state or we have a high rate of car theft.

“I dread when my daughter comes down to live with us because it will be more expensive for her.”

The price hike will cost the family several dollars extra a week, but they are more frustrated they haven’t been given an explanation.

When asked what factors caused Camden to be listed as a “high risk” area, a Woolworths spokesman was unable to give a direct response.

“Woolworths aims to provide great value insurance products to all Australians,” he said. “We consider a wide range of factors, which can vary significantly across different areas, when setting prices.”

Insurance Council Australia’s General Manager of Communications and Media Relations Campbell Fuller, said insurance prices in Camden were likely influenced by flood and bushfire risk.

“Premiums are underwritten based on the risks present at each individual address, not at a postcode level,” he said. “Properties with greater exposure to risks, such as floods, bushfires and cyclones, will typically pay a higher premium that reflects the risk.”
