A 71-year-old aged care resident has been found dead in bushland near Campbelltown.

The man, who was a resident at an Estia Health Kilbride at Gilead, was last seen about 4pm yesterday.

It is understood he suffered from dementia.

Family posted an impassioned plea on Facebook community groups for help finding their loved one on Tuesday night, with the post suggesting the man left the aged care facility as a visitor entered the building.

An Estia Health spokeswoman said the organisation was “deeply saddened” by the death.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the resident’s family and our focus is on supporting and assisting them at this tragic time, as well as supporting our employees who provided his care,” she said.

“We are fully cooperating with ongoing police inquiries.”

A Campbelltown PAC spokesman said the man’s body was found “not far” from the facility.

“Police were patrolling overnight and making inquiries online,” he said.

At first light, Rural Fire Service and State Emergency Service volunteers, police officers and a police helicopter began searching for the man in nearby bushland.

The body, which has not yet been formally identified, was found by police about 9.20am this morning behind the aged care home.

A crime scene has been established and a brief will be prepared for the Coroner.

Police will complete a “thorough investigation” into all the circumstances surrounding the death and the man’s last known movements.
