Police allege a furious woman, who claimed she was infected with COVID-19, has spat on a teenage McDonald’s employee after her card failed to work.

Police were told Kelly Hogan, 51, became aggressive about 8pm on Wednesday at Eagle Vale Marketplace when she couldn’t pay for her order.

The St Andrews woman allegedly spat on an 18-year-old girl working at the counter, before shattering a glass door.

Hogan was arrested and taken to Campbelltown Police Station, where she allegedly told police officers she had coronavirus before coughing in the face of senior male constable.

Her charges of assault, damage property, and coughing with COVID-19 were mentioned at Campbelltown Local Court on Thursday, where she did not apply for bail.

Magistrate Michael Barko noted Hogan required treatment for mental health issues.

Campbelltown Police Area Command crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Greg Inger said the incidents of spitting or coughing on people wouldn’t be accepted in the community.

“The actions of spitting on someone is very, very low,” he said. “In the current times, it makes it even worse. That sort of conduct won’t be tolerated.”

A McDonald’s spokesman said “full support” had been offered to the alleged victim.

“The safety and security of our people and customers is our top priority,” he said. “We have a number of security measures in place, such as CCTV, and are assisting the police with their investigation into this incident.

“We do not tolerate any form of violence or abuse.”
