The operators behind the beloved Campbelltown cinema renowned for its cheap tickets could shut the doors after a tough battle with a changing movie industry.

Dumaresq Street Cinema sits in the heart of Campbelltown on council-owned land and has long been run by the Moore family.

Operating as a budget cinema, the business has been a popular destination for families, students and pensioners alike with all movie tickets costing $7.50.

But, the doors could soon close for good.

Campbelltown Council’s director of city governance Phu Nguyen said the council had been working with the operator of the Dumaresq Street Cinema regarding its ongoing operation and lease of the council-owned site.

“The current lease between the cinema operator and council is due to expire in November 2023 and the lessee has sought in-principle support from council for consideration of an early termination of their lease,” he said.

“Council understands that the operator is still considering the options available to them, however they have the support of council should they make the decision to end their lease early.”

Mr Nguyen said the prevalence of streaming services, the decline in new movie releases due to the impact of the pandemic, and other factors in recent times have led to a diminishment in cinema admissions.

“During the pandemic, council worked closely with the operator to support them given the significant impacts the pandemic had on venues like cinemas,” he said.

“We acknowledge that the Dumaresq Street Cinema is an important part of our city’s history and we express our thanks to the operator who has provided this much-loved service to our community from more than 30 years.

“While we are saddened at the prospect that the current tenant may choose to no longer operate this site, we understand the current market challenges and respect any decision they make in the best interest of their operations.”

Mr Nguyen said council would support the operators during this time.

“Council is committed to ensuring this important community asset continues to serve our diverse community, as part of our ongoing commitment to activate our city centre and provide accessible entertainment options,” he said.

“Should the operator make the decision to not continue their lease, a process would be undertaken to secure a use for the premises that would continue to provide benefit to our community.”
