It is an understatement to say the past 12 months have been difficult for father-of-two Shane Wakley, being made redundant from job in the banking industry and discovering a tumour in his chest.

Now, his two mates from his high school days have rallied to help him in his battle against cancer.

Four weeks ago, Shane Wakley needed to call an ambulance due to severe back pain, and after numerous tests, he and his family heard that one terrifying word - cancer.

Mr Wakley had a tumour in his chest, which had crushed three vertebrae. He has since been diagnosed with a stage four metastatic germ cell tumour.

“During Covid, he was made redundant after his company made lots of restructures,” friend Kyle Sinclair said.

Shane Wakley’s mates Kyle Sinclair and Mark Anthony Mico have started a GoFundMe to help him after his cancer diagnosis.

“He and his family were living in Spring Farm at the time, and his wife, Steph, is a full-time carer of their youngest daughter, Evie, who has severe autism.

“He tried to find contract work in and around southwest Sydney but could not.”

Mr Wakley moved to the Gold Coast to find work and, after settling in, bought a home in November so his wife and children could join him. It was only a few months later that he was diagnosed.

Mr Wakley’s met his two close friends, Kyle Sinclair and Mark Anthony Mico, when starting in Year 7 at Bossley Park High School

After graduating more than 20 years ago the trio drifted apart, but have since rekindled their friendship in recent years.

Mr Sinclair, who lives in Oran Park, said when Mr Wakley became sick they began sending him money to help cover bills.

But then they found out he would need chemo, and they started to think on a bigger scale, and that’s when a GoFundMe was launched.

Mr Sinclair initially hoped they could raise $10,000, but in just three days they have raised nearly $19,000.

He hopes they can raise $25,000 to help cover the Wakley family’s bills for three to four months.

“More than 100 people have donated, and some of those have been blokes who we went to school with and have not spoken to in 20 years,” Mr Sinclair said.

“We had one person who donated, and they left a messaging saying, ‘don’t know you, Shane, but I hope this helps to lighten the load’. He donated $200, which shows how generous people can be.”
