Placards, banners and stuffed koalas packed into an overflowing Campbelltown Local Planning Panel meeting, with about 30 objectors sharing their displeasure of the proposed clearing of a 210ha Gilead site.

The plight of the region’s unique koala colony, the site’s indigenous and colonial history, and water and sewerage infrastructure concerns were raised to the panel of planning experts this afternoon.

The development application, lodged by Lend Lease, proposes the removal of trees, dewatering of dams and major earthworks of its Appin Rd site.

If approved, it would pave the way for 1700 homes, the first stage of Lend Lease’s Gilead estate.

National Parks Association Macarthur branch member Patricia Durman told the panel the anticipated residential development would be an eyesore to all visitors to Campbelltown.

“(Visitors) will leave now thinking what a second rate city,” she said.

“They will think thank god they are out of this place.”

Wayne Smithers, speaking in opposition to the development application, said the proposed earthworks were ‘premature’.

Eight community members spoke in opposition of the proposed works.

A Lend Lease representative told the panel the company understood there was community opposition.

“Lend Lease has a long and proud history in the region, through the development of Glen Alpine and Macarthur Square to name two,” he said.

“We certainly understand that there are some local concerns … and we have listened to those concerns.”

The representative highlighted the role of the local Aboriginal Land Council and Office of Environment and Heritage in assessing the site.

The panel will deliberate the proposal and publish a decision on the Campbelltown City Council website within the next 48 hours.
