A justice precinct could see new courthouses, a library and other facilities in the heart of Campbelltown to cater to the rapidly expanding population in southwest Sydney.

Community consultation is now underway as part of the planning process for the South West Sydney Community and Justice Precinct which is a joint project between three levels of government under the Western Sydney City Deal to drive jobs growth and stimulate the economy.

Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the five-hectare precinct would aim to set a new benchmark for social justice by improving access to courts and community services, while also enhancing education and employment opportunities.

“A new Community and Justice Precinct has the potential to deliver jobs, education opportunities and streamlined access to justice services for the people of Western Sydney,” he said.

“I strongly encourage residents to take part in the consultation process so we can begin planning a precinct that best reflects the needs of the community.”

Proposed facilities for the site may include new courts and justice services, a city library and education facilities, community facilities, offices, retail and new public spaces.

The proposed precinct would be at the current Campbelltown Court House and Campbelltown Civic Centre sites that is bound by Queen Street, Hurley Street, Short Street, Patrick Street and Broughton Street.

Campbelltown mayor George Greiss said this was an exciting time for the community and an opportunity to see their ideas and aspirations for the precinct incorporated into the plan.

“This community consultation process will shape the aesthetic of the precinct, the use of public spaces and the types of places that residents want to see and experience,” he said.

“The precinct would not only meet the justice needs of a growing population, but also signal that the Campbelltown CBD is an attractive place for business to thrive.

“This is the first step as part of an ongoing consultation process to ensure that the community has real ownership over the project and that it is reflective of people’s aspirations for our city.”

Residents are encouraged to provide their views on what they would like to see and experience in the precinct by completing an online survey before June 19.

Targeted consultation is planned for specific groups including representatives of the Aboriginal community, to ensure connections with Country to inform the planning and design of the precinct.

The information gained in the consultation will assist to inform the preparation of a master plan, the draft of which will be finalised in September and shared with the community for feedback.
