A man has been charged with animal cruelty after he allegedly neglected a range of animals on a south western Sydney property and left two parasite-ridden goats confined in a tiny pen and covered in urine and faeces.

The matter of Colin Jordan, 65, was heard in Picton Court on Wednesday after he was charged with failing to provide proper shelter to an animal, two counts of committing an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal, and four counts of failing to provide vet treatment for animals in his care.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) allege Mr Jordan committed seven counts of animal cruelty on a property in Thirlmere between September and November last year.

According to documents tendered to the court, the Tahmoor resident failed to provide veterinary treatment for an emaciated rooster plagued by internal and external parasites, lethargy and an untreated wound on its body. The RSPCA allege the rooster was in such a bad condition that it was cruel to keep it alive.

The court documents state Mr Jordan also failed to provide veterinary treatment for a male and a female goat who were in poor condition and enduring external and internal parasites.

The RSPCA claims the male goat was suffering from an untreated respiratory infection and long toes, which caused the goat pain.

According to the court documents, Mr Jordan committed an act of cruelty on the goats by continually confining them to a very small pen where they were distressed and covered in a “deep sludge of urine, faeces, and mud”.

The RSPCA allege Mr Jordan also failed to care for a sheep on the Thirlmere property when he tethered the animal to a stationary object and failed to provide any shelter from the extremes of the weather.

According to the RSPCA, Mr Jordan has contravened the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 on seven occasions by neglecting the welfare of the rooster, goats, and sheep.

Although he initially indicated he would like to plead guilty to the charges during his first court appearance, Mr Jordan has since sought legal advice and is yet to formally enter pleas to the charges.

On Wednesday, Picton Court heard no further adjournments will be tolerated and pleas must be entered during the next court appearance.

Mr Jordan will return to Picton Court on May 25 to enter pleas.
