A man has been sentenced after he told police he couldn’t feel how fast he was going when he sped along a major highway at more than 210 km/hr with a passenger in his son’s Mercedes Benz.

Mehmet Oguz Erkekascan, 49, was sentenced in Moss Vale Court on April 19 after pleading guilty to driving recklessly or in a dangerous manner near Mittagong in January.

According to the police facts, the Greenacre resident was driving south a black Mercedes C63 AMG along the Hume Motorway near Mittagong at a speed well in excess of the signposted limit.

Police were conducting checks near a dangerous section of road known as the Dipper around 6pm on January 20 when they saw the car zooming towards them, according to the facts. Police say they checked Erkekascan’s speed at 214km/hr – more than 100 km/hr over the speed limit for the road.

Officers activated their warning lights and pulled the car over a short distance later. Erkekascan handed over his driver‘s licence but admitted he didn’t know how fast he’d been going, according to the police.

“I didn’t look,” the facts show he told officers.

When he was informed he was travelling at almost double the speed limit, Erkekascan told officers he hadn’t noticed how fast he was going.

“First time I drove (the car) and I didn’t even feel it. It’s my son’s car,” he told police.

According to documents tendered to the court, his son was a passenger in the car at the time of the speeding offence.

When he was pulled over, Erkekascan was subjected to a roadside breath test and returned a negative result.

Moss Vale court heard the second charge of driving more than 45km/hr over the speed limit was withdrawn by the prosecution after Erkekascan pleaded guilty to driving recklessly.

He was convicted of the offence and fined $1200. After being convicted, Erkekascan has been barred from holding a driver’s licence for a year until January 2023.
