A magistrate has slammed a man who attacked police after a western Sydney rap music video descended into an out-of-control street riot, involving machetes and baseball bats, warning him the night could have turned “deadly”.

Cory Debono, 22, was filming a rap video with group ‘Official 046’ when anarchy took over the streets of Claymore, near Campbelltown, in September last year.

The court heard up to 80 hostile young men were brandishing weapons, including replica guns, as they stood on top of cars and shop roofs, ultimately violently clashing with police.

One male even snuck behind a police riot formation and got inside a police vehicle, while others punched and kicked police officers.

At the peak of the violence, a ‘paranoid’ Debono aggressively threatened police with his fists in a wild display of intimidation.

“(Debono) and co-offenders kept mimicking they were going to attack officers again by bouncing on their feet in a boxing style, smashing their chest with their fists and yelling,” the agreed facts stated.

The two ringleaders have been sentenced for their roles in the violence.

The 22-year-old then hid behind smoke from a lit flare and launched a glass bottle missile at police, which landed close to their feet. He then fled the scene.

Magistrate Shane McAnulty warned Debono someone could’ve been killed if police were forced to shoot as the group had gone “tropo”.

“It was absolute chaos,” he said. “It was lucky they were not seriously injured or killed.”

Debono was convicted of rioting and sentenced to an Intensive Corrections Order, which is a jail sentence served in the community. He was also ordered to complete 200 hours community service.

The two ringleaders of the riot have previously been sentenced. Airds man Tura Tangimetu will be sentenced next week for his role.
