Body of missing person, believed to be Matthew Barrett, found

The deceased body, believed to be that of missing 29-year-old man Matthew Barrett, has been located by police. The man had been missing since February.

A deceased body, believed to be that of missing 29-year-old man Matthew Barrett, has been located by police in The Oaks, near Camden, yesterday.

The Camden Council worker had not been seen since February 27 after leaving a friend’s Spring Farm home on his red Honda 650 motorbike about 7.45pm to return to his Werombi home.

He was reported missing when he failed to turn up to work as a garbage collector for Camden Council the next day.

A police spokeswoman said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

It is understood the deceased body and Matthew Barrett’s motorbike was found in thick bushes off a steep embankment on Silverdale Rd, The Oaks.

His mother Marina took to social media to share an emotion-charged tribute for her son.

“Steve, Shaun, Nathan and I would like to thank the many strangers, friends and family that searched, reach out to us and listened to our story through tears,” she posted on Facebook.

“Our baby is found and will be coming home.

“You will always be our Mackie, our pride and joy and the best thing that entered our lives.”

A Camden Council spokesman said Matthew Barrett a valuable and longstanding employee who would be “sadly missed” by his colleagues.

“A happy and easygoing guy, Matt was well-liked by the team and enjoyed his job,” he said. “He was the kind of person you could always rely on.

“The team is close-knit and at various times Matt worked with both his father and uncle.

“Matt will be sadly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Barrett family during this tough time.”

The Werombi man’s father Steve Barrett had been frequently appealing for answers on social media, recently posting on Facebook it was “the absolute worst time of my life”.

“You are still missing and we have no idea how, why or what has happened,” he posted on April 24.

“Someone has to find something. Love you Buddy.”

An extensive search operation, with aerial support and community volunteers, took place in the weeks following Matthew Barrett’s disappearance.

Police will continue to examine the scene today.
