Campbelltown senior constable Steven Lea Bell pleads not guilty to assault charges

Police will also allege that the officer re-entered a licensed premises in Camden after being refused admission due to being intoxicated.

A southwest Sydney police officer accused of assaulting two people has indicated he will fight the charges.

Steven Lea Bell, a senior constable attached to Campbelltown Police Area Command, was due to appear at Picton Local Court on Wednesday.

The 40-year-old faces three charges including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.

Prosecutors will allege the offences, involving two people, occurred between 11.30pm and 11.40pm at Camden on February 5.

Police will also allege that Bell re-entered Barenz, a licensed premises in Camden, within 24 hours of being refused admission or being turned out due to being intoxicated.

At court on Monday, Magistrate Mark Douglass indicated that a letter had been filed on behalf of Constable Bell.

“There is a written plea of not guilty,” he said.

The police prosecutor indicated that the Office of The Director of Public Prosecutions would be appearing in the matter.

Constable Bell’s case will return to Picton Local Court on May 20.
