Campbelltown’s Queen St could sparkle once more, with a glitzy 11-storey hotel and club proposed to rejuvenate the vibrant heart of the fast-growing city centre.
The $50 million proposal, lodged by Campbelltown RSL Club to council in recent weeks, plans to “raise the bar” in the precinct with a buzzing and vibrant complex featuring a two-level club venue and a hotel rising above.
Campbelltown RSL venue manager Luke Whalan said the development, proposed for the existing City Arcade site, could make Queen St great again.
“To see Queen St in the state it is in today, something really needs to be done to reactivate and promote the area,” he said.
“An activated Queen St would be fantastic for local businesses, the economy and would create jobs. With us leading the change on Queen St, we hope that can show other businesses there is opportunities in the area and if we work together as a community to encourage better offerings, it’s only going to be a good thing.”
The proposed hotel is the first part of Campbelltown RSL Club’s mammoth plans to overhaul the city’s skyline, with plans to deliver three apartment towers up to 24 storeys high on the club’s existing Carberry Lane site.
About 100,000 new residents are expected to move into the Campbelltown local government across the next 16 years.
Campbelltown Chamber of Commerce president Tamlyn Van Zyst said she believed the plans, on first glance, would be a positive for the city.
“It will bring more employment to the area and it will tie in nicely with the Re-Imagine Campbelltown vision, so I think it can only bring food opportunities to Queen St,” she said.
A function centre, sports bar, cafe and terrace dining is proposed to feature in the new two-storey RSL club, with Mr Whalan revealing it would be targeting the city’s future residents.
“We plan to change the offerings and environment to something that is buzzing and vibrant, something that resonates with the new people who will be moving into the area,” he said.
Mr Whalan said advanced talks were in motion for Accor Hotels to operate the hotel.
The building, if approved, is expected to be nearing completion by the end of 2022.
