A cutting-edge medical research facility, a state-of-the-art justice precinct and an inner-city university campus could soon call the city of Campbelltown home.
A new agreement will see Western Sydney University (WSU) and Campbelltown Council work hand-in-hand towards the city-shaping projects, with “advanced and detailed discussions” already taken place.
WSU assistant vice-chancellor Andy Marks told the Chronicle the council’s bold Re-Imagine Campbelltown vision, which includes the lofty goal of becoming ‘Australia’s greenest city’, had inspired the university to join forces.
“We have watched very closely council’s strategies around re-imagining the city through it’s health and education precinct … which for us sends a really clear signal, not just to universities but also to industry and the government, about what Campbelltown wants to specialise in,” he said.
Mr Marks said a vertical university campus, similar to Liverpool’s 10-storey CBD campus, would be explored.
The existing WSU Campbelltown campus wouldn’t be impacted under the bold vision.
Campbelltown Mayor George Brticevic said in a statement that the partnership with WSU would help the city transform into a booming health and education precinct.
“This agreement will strengthen our ability to identify and deliver projects that will benefit our community by creating local jobs and improving services,” he said.
A medical research centre, justice and civic precinct, and sports and health centre of excellence will also be explored as part of the three-year Memorandum of Understanding.
