Towering buildings soaring up to 52m high is edging closer to reality for the flunked Brands on Sale factory outlet site, with modified plans recently endorsed by Campbelltown Council.
The mega-project is set to transform the existing eyesore into a vibrant precinct including more than 400 apartments, an ‘Eat Street’ featuring restaurants and cafes, and retail space.
Councillors unanimously supported a modified version of the original plans which saw one apartment tower completely scrapped, in exchange for the remaining five buildings to upsize.
The Queen St site is owned by two companies with the same two shareholders, construction firm ALAND founder Andrew Hrsto and 35-year-old Hameed Bechara.
A masterplan for the site was endorsed by council which will see no building rise higher than 15 storeys, with the precinct to connect with the nearby Campbelltown Performing Arts High School.
Planning documents reveal the five buildings will potentially stand 15, 14, 13, 12 and 12 storeys high respectively.
Only a single councillor spoke about the modified plans, with Ben Moroney saying they now supported the vision.
“I have been pretty vocal before I wasn’t in favour of this original proposal,” he said. “I don’t think it’s adjacent to enough appropriate transport for the density but given this is a situation where the density isn’t increasing and we are getting more open space and solar access in exchange for that, I will be supporting the proposal.”
The council will call on the state government to adjust a gateway determination for the site, with the endorsed ‘development control plan’ to go on public exhibition.
No development applications have been lodged for the site.
