The first look at the future multi-storey car park at Campbelltown Station has been unveiled for the development proposal that aims to cater for more commuters in the region.
In October 2020, Hume MP Angus Taylor announced that the 2020-21 federal budget confirmed $22.1 million would deliver an additional 500 car parks at Campbelltown station.
Nearly two years later, Campbelltown City Council has secured the funding to design and construct a multi-deck commuter car park on the site at Farrow Rd.
A development application has been submitted for the site which currently houses an at-grade commuter car park with no existing buildings other than fencing and light poles.
The proposal includes the construction of a five-storey commuter car park, and a partial retention of the current parking already available at the site.
Documents submitted to council show the development would comprise of 96 to 106 spaces per floor as well as 427 at the ground level leading to a total of 935 spaces.
It would also include an entry lobby with lift access to all floors on the corner of Farrow Road, a new driveway off the same road and modifications to the current one.
“The proposed car park is to service commuter demand associated with the rail line,” a report submitted to council said.
“The proposed building has been designed to easily facilitate the infrastructure upgraded required for future electric vehicle demand.
“The proposal has acceptable traffic impacts and will promote the use of the Rail Station, in a convenient fashion, for residents in this locality.”
Residents have been waiting for more car parking at the station for more than five years.
In 2015, an extra 450 parking spaces were promised for Campbelltown station by Gladys Berejiklian when she was transport minister in the lead-up to the state election.
But three years later, the promise was broken and then NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance said the government had cancelled the project in August.
Then in 2019, the Coalition government announced $30 million would go towards increasing parking spaces at Campbelltown and Macarthur. This was echoed by the 2020 announcement.
The current development was lodged with Campbelltown City Council on June 10, but the consent authority for the proposal is the Sydney West Planning Panel.
According to the council website, the development is being prepared for public exhibition.
