A stay-at-home dad caught with bags of coke in his underwear turned to drug dealing in the eastern suburbs to fuel his cocaine habit, a court has heard.

Andrew Kyriacou, 34, was caught selling cocaine from his vehicle near The Royal Hotel in Bondi on Saturday, August 31.

Police saw a man get into Mr Kyriacou’s parked Mazda3 near the hotel about 10pm before the pair drove off. Mr Kyriacou returned shortly after and dropped off the passenger.

Plain-clothed police stopped the passenger and found one bag of cocaine in his wallet.

They then stopped Mr Kyriacou in his car on nearby Fletcher St.

“The accused explained he was just in the area to meet up with mates,” the agreed facts read.

Police noticed his phone receiving constant messages on an app called Signal and police suspected he was a drug runner receiving jobs from a “call centre”, the agreed facts stated.

Police searched the Currans Hill man and his vehicle and found seven bags of cocaine and one bag of MDMA in “the underwear of the accused”.

Police also found $1250 in cash in the glove box.

He was sentenced at Waverley Local Court.

“Police allege that the accused was participating in a sophisticated drug supply syndicate.”

He was arrested and the drugs were weighed which included 10.31g of cocaine and 0.73g of MDMA. The cash was seized.

He was sentenced at Waverley Local Court this week and narrowly avoided being sent to prison, receiving a term of imprisonment for nine months to be served by way of intensive correction in the community.

Mr Kyriacou’s defence said he struggled with a cocaine addiction in the past and he relapsed at the time of the offending.

“He involved himself with the supplier to fuel his addiction,” his defence said. “His addiction was the driving force for his behaviour.”

He said he had been seeing a counsellor since the incident and had been clean for three months.

His defence said he was a full-time carer for his children at the time of the incident but he had since been employed with an airconditioning company.

Magistrate Clare Farnan said it was a familiar offence in the court.

“These facts are sadly extremely familiar to me as a magistrate in the local court,” she said.

“You are one of many people used by drug dealers to sell drugs on the streets of Sydney to people who call them up or use apps (to purchase the drugs).”

Mr Kyriacou must abstain from drugs as part of his sentence.
