Final countdown to NSW state election

A safe injecting room at Campbelltown Hospital, a reform of social housing and legislation for assisted dying are among the policies Campbelltown Greens candidate Jayden Rivera hopes will win people over during Saturday’s election.

Mr Rivera, 24, said he believed the Greens’ message in this election had begun to cut through with voters.

He will still have an almighty task to overturn sitting Labor MP Greg Warren’s 7.3 per cent margin.

Mr Rivera, who previously lived in social housing himself, said the Greens would want 30 per cent of housing in new developments to be social housing.

He said a safe injecting room at the Campbelltown Hospital precinct would help address drug problems in the region.

“We need to tackle drug abuse problems and a safe injecting room would give people safe access to rehabilitation and treatment,” he said.

“I think that access to a safe space for people is something that is needed in the Campbelltown area.”

Mr Rivera also wants to see assisted dying legislation put back up for debate in the parliament for the elderly and extremely sick.

“I understand it’s an issue that many people are worried about,” he said.

“It would need to be signed off by a legal guardian or next-of-kin.

“I would also think two doctors would be required to sign off, you could have one doctor who would then refer onto a specialist.”
